The amount of sessions you will need will vary from person to person depending on many factors such as colour, location, depth of ink, size and if it is a cover up. As a rough guide, amateur tattoos can be removed in 2-6 sessions and professional tattoos can be removed in 6-12. Tattoos will be considerably reduced if not completely removed.
Sessions will be spaced between 8-12 weeks apart. We will start at 8 weeks apart and as your tattoo fades more, we will gradually increase spacing to 12 weeks apart.
The treatment does come with some discomfort. Most clients say it feels like a sharp snap of an elastic band against the skin. We recommend using numbing cream before your appointment to make it more comfortable for you. We can also take breaks during the treatment to cool the area too.
You must wait at least 3-6 months after getting your tattoo before we can remove it.
Most tattoos can be completely removed. However, there are some tattoos such as those with lots of heavy shading/multiple layers and certain ink colours that may take longer to fade and may not be 100% removed. During your consultation we can assess your tattoo.
You must avoid sun exposure or use of sun-beds for at least 4 weeks prior and after treatment. We also recommend wearing SPF 30+ on the area even before/after this 4 weeks to protect your skin. UV exposure can cause changes to the pigment and damage to the skin as it is more sensitive when treated. It is not advised to use sun-beds at all during your tattoo removal process.
You should expect to have some side-effects post treatment with the most common being immediate frosting (whitening) of the tattoo. This should go down within a couple of minutes of treatment, if not a couple of hours. You may also experience some temporary tenderness, redness, swelling and/or blistering. We will run through all of this at your consultation and provide you with pre and post care to follow.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind before your treatment.
-Use numbing cream at least 30 minutes before treatment
-Avoid sun exposure for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment
-Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and make sure to eat something.
-Please avoid alcohol or caffein for at least 24 hours before.
-If there is hair in the area, please shave beforehand. This does not apply for eyebrows.
Yes! Tattoos that are closer to the heart tend to be the easiest to remove while tattoos on the extremities (hands, lower legs or feet) may require a few extra sessions. This is due to the reduced circulation in these areas.
